Oxy-Fuel Combustion in Refineries & Chemical Plants
Oxy-fuel combustion is a process where pure oxygen (O₂) is used instead of air to enhance the combustion of fuels in refineries, chemical plants, and industrial furnaces. This method significantly improves combustion efficiency, increases thermal output, and reduces energy consumption by eliminating the nitrogen ballast present in air, which normally dilutes the flame and absorbs heat.
Oxidation Reactions in Chemical Synthesis
Oxidation reactions are fundamental in chemical synthesis, where oxygen (O₂) or oxidizing agents are used to convert raw hydrocarbons into valuable chemical intermediates. These intermediates—ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and nitric acid—are crucial for manufacturing plastics, resins, fertilizers, and other industrial chemicals.
Metallurgical processing and smelting
Industrial Gases are involved in the extraction, refinement, and purification of metals from their ores using high-temperature oxidation reactions. Oxygen (O₂) and other industrial gases play a key role in enhancing the efficiency of smelting processes, increasing metal recovery rates, reducing fuel consumption, and lowering emissions.
The extraction of gold and silver from ores is commonly achieved through the cyanide leaching process, where oxygen (O₂) plays a critical role in enhancing leaching efficiency and increasing metal recovery rates. By introducing oxygen into cyanide-based leaching solutions, the reaction rate is accelerated, resulting in faster and more complete gold and silver dissolution.
Some of the most common uses of Industrial Gases:
• Accelerates Metal Extraction – Oxygen-enriched air increases flame temperatures, leading to faster chemical reactions that separate metals from their ores.
• Reduces Fuel & Energy Consumption – Higher oxygen levels improve combustion efficiency, reducing the amount of coal, coke, or fuel oil needed in the furnace.
• Improves Purity & Metal Yield – Oxygen helps remove impurities such as sulfur, carbon, and other unwanted elements through oxidation.
• Decreases Greenhouse Gas Emissions – Less fuel usage leads to lower CO₂ and SO₂ emissions, improving environmental sustainability.
