Particle Size Reduction | How Does AHG’s Nitrogen Assist In Particle Size Reduction?

Cryogenic grinding can assist the grinding industry by allowing more effective and efficient participle size production for heat sensitive or tough-to-mill materials, and this is achieved through the use of liquid Nitrogen. At Abdullah Hashim Industrial Gases & Equipment providers, one of our standard services is Nitrogen supply.

Some facts about Nitrogen:

  1. Nitrogen (N₂) is a molecule that constitutes 78% of the air we breathe.
  2. Nitrogen has a boiling point of -195.8°C, at atmospheric pressure, and a melting point of -210°C. Also, if Nitrogen is compressed, it can turn into a solid without cooling.
  3. It is a colorless, odorless, and inert gas.
  4. Nitrogen is valued both as a gas for its inert properties and a liquid for cooling and freezing.

How Does AHG get Nitrogen directly from the air?

  1. Nitrogen can be produced industrially by the fractional distillation of air in a cryogenic air separation unit.
  2. This process separates liquid Nitrogen directly from the air, as the process makes use of the different temperatures that allow nitrogen to turn into a liquid and separate from the air.
  3. Using the same method, Argon and Oxygen are also produced.

Why Is Particle Size Important?

The rubber and plastics industries are two significant operations that rely on grinding and crushing in their production process. Ground to increase their surface area which directly reflects on increased reaction rates or pellets are ground to ease the creation of homogeneous blends.

Why Introduce Cryogenics In The Grinding Process?

Many of the raw materials used in the rubber and plastics industry do not have the properties that allow the particles to be reduced to the desired size effectively. Introducing Liquid Nitrogen allows for the materials to be cooled to a degree that changes their properties.

  1. Some materials begin to melt due to the heat generated from the friction, having them cooled cryogenically prior to grinding will stop this from happening.
  2. Other materials may plasticize, oxidize and discolor if they were not cooled.
  3. Chilling the materials prior to cooling also makes them brittle which results in less energy used and in a better quality powder.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Cryogenic Grinding Technology?

When compared to other technologies, cryogenic grinding systems can:

  1. Increase throughput whilst maintaining the same particle size distribution.
  2. Achieve finer grinding at the same throughput.
  3. Reducing energy costs.
  4. More uniformity in particle sizes.
  5. Improved process safety due to nitrogen inertness.
  6. Improved product quality.

Cryogenic Grinding Can Help the Environment:

Tires do not decompose. When used and disposed of in landfills or junkyards, over time they release chemicals into the air, ground, and water that affect the environment. These tires have been recycled by multiple industries and have been used in a variety of applications to reduce this effect. However, the tires must be shredded in order for them to be able to be recycled. And shredding tires consume a vast amount of energy, and by using liquid nitrogen the amount of time and energy used is significantly reduced. This assists in reducing tire build-ups and thereby helping to create e better environment.

For almost 70 years, Abdullah Hashim Industrial Gases and Equipment has been providing the Saudi Arabian market with Industrial and Medical gas supplies.

  1. AHG has a large fleet of over two hundred vehicles that transport our products across the Kingdom, and our continuously expanding list of branches is scattered across the Kingdom to ensure maximum coverage within the country.
  2. However, some of our customers require a fit-for-purpose solution to match their specific requirements or to overcome logistical hurdles that can impact their supply.
  3. This is where AHG and Air Products, our international partners, can proudly say that we have extensive experience in providing our customers with customized solutions that provide their business with their exact requirements.
