Aquaculture | How do Industrial Gases Support The Aquaculture Industry?

At Abdullah Hashim Industrial Gases & Equipment, one of the industries we serve is the Aquaculture industry.  Aquaculture is a controlled process for cultivating seafood, typically called fish farming.

Key Facts About Aquaculture:

  1. Due to the overfishing of natural sources, the world needs to find alternative sources for seafood to feed the growing world population.
  2. It is estimated that almost 60 percent if produced seafood will come from aquaculture by 2030.
  3. Aquaculture present a sustainable option for both farmers and consumers.
  4. The process of fish farming can be done one both land and in-natural water sources.
  5. Oxygen supplied by industrial gas suppliers plays a large role in Aquaculture.
  6. The fish farms can use either Fresh or Salt water.

What Role Does AHG Play in Aquaculture Industry as oxygen providers?

The key gas used in Aquaculture is Oxygen, It is greatly valued in fish farming due to two main reasons.

  1. The first of which is obvious. Oxygen is used to sustain the lives of the fish.
  2. The second reason is that the Oxygen increases the fish’s metabolism. This translates to the fish gaining more mass in a shorter period of time.
  3. Oxygen is also used to purify the water when it enters the pump that is commonly referred to Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS), during the cycle the oxygen is used to produce ozone and sterilize the water before being pumped back into the tanks.
  4. Just before the fish are harvested, the fish are gathered in small tanks and which lead to the fish being crowded. In normal situations, this leads to the fish becoming stressed and sometimes suffocating. However, dosing an increased amount of oxygen ensures that the fish do not become stressed and receive sufficient oxygen.

Essential Facts About Oxygen:

  1. Oxygen (O₂) is a molecule that constitutes approximately 21% of Earth’s air.
  2. Oxygen’s boiling point -183°C and its melting point is −218.8°C, at normal atmospheric pressure.
  3. Oxygen is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas essential to living organisms. It is valued for its strong oxidizing and life-sustaining properties.

Oxygen Can Be Produced Industrially by:

  1. Oxygen is produced industrially by the fractional distillation of liquid air in a cryogenic air separation unit, a process that separates liquid Oxygen directly from the air. Using the same method, Nitrogen and Argon are also produced.
  2. Oxygen can also be produced by using the principle of Water electrolysis, along with Hydrogen. Oxygen and Hydrogen, the two components of Water (H2O), are separated by passing a high electrical current through an electrolyte, each gas purified and then stored.

Why does maintaining correct Oxygen levels in the water improve the yield?

  1. Improves feed utilization.
  2. Leads to higher yields.
  3. Improves production and quality.
  4. Minimizes need for medication.
  5. Reduces the growth period.
  6. Reduces fish mortality rate.
  7. Enables higher stock density.
  8. Reduces water use.
  9. Reduces energy costs.
  10. Reduces environmental impact.
  11. Provides additional production stability.

After harvesting, there are other uses for industrial Gases in the Aquaculture process:

  1. Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen are used to increase the shelf life and maintain the quality of the products until it reaches the consumer.
  2. Liquid Nitrogen and Liquid Carbon Dioxide are also used to freeze the products.
  3. Dry Ice, solid Carbon Dioxide, can be used to keep the food chilled or frozen during transport.

In every stage of the aquaculture process, until the product reaches its consumer, there are potential applications for industrial gases that are guaranteed to increase productivity and reduce costs.
